In stage 4 lung cancer, treatment choices are a bit of a balancing act. Doctors look at genetic testing results to see if there are mutations they can target—if yes, targeted therapy can deliver better results with often fewer side effects. If there aren’t mutations, or if the cancer is aggressive, immunotherapy (e.g. PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors) or chemotherapy may be used, or even both together. Patient’s age, general health (“performance status”), how far the cancer has spread, and personal stem cell treatment for diabetes goals weigh in too.
